The Art of New York Interiors: A Celebration of Collected Living

Discover important art and design from distinguished New York interiors, complemented by jewelry and property from additional estates, at Newel Auctions on September 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM EST. A memorable interior is never defined by a single period, maker, or medium. It develops through layers of art, furniture, objects, and personal choices, each contributing to the atmosphere of a room. On September 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM EST., Newel Auctions will celebrate that spirit with The Art of New York Interiors: Decorated by Despont, Bastone, and MAC II. The sale brings together art and design from distinguished New York estates curated by Stephen Bastone, Thierry Despont, MAC II, and other influential figures in the history of interior design. The result is a portrait of how sophisticated New Yorkers have lived with art and design. “Access to these exceptional homes gives us a rare opportunity to preserve their history and share it with collectors around the world” – Jake Baer, 4th Generation CEO of Newel About the Collection The auction’s principal interior collections bring together hundreds of important works of furniture, fine art, and decorative arts selected for rooms by Stephen Bastone, Thierry Despont, and other influential designers. Complementing these interiors, the auction also includes jewelry and select property from other estates.  At the center of the collection is a monumental 1987 oil on canvas by Ana Mercedes Hoyos. The fine art selection also includes an oil by French artist Émile Bernard, and a group of 3 original drawings by Sol LeWitt. Educated at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and Harvard University, he established his New York practice in 1980 and served as an associate architect for the centennial restoration of the Statue of Liberty. His interiors were celebrated for their architectural rigor, rich materials, and ability to make grandeur feel personal. Stephen Bastone Born in New York, Stephen Bastone first entered the creative world through fashion, modeling in Milan and Paris after attracting the attention of Donatella Versace and Vivienne Westwood. His 10 year apprenticeship with Vincent Fourcade grounded him in the finest traditions of 19th century craftsmanship and introduced him to figures including Diana Vreeland, Jayne Wrightsman, and Annette de la Renta. Bastone later became a longtime associate of Alberto Pinto’s Paris atelier, contributing to some of its most opulent interiors. Today, his bespoke work seamlessly unites sensual sophistication, Old World forms, and 21st century style. MAC II MAC II was founded in New York in 1967 by Mica Ertegun and Chessy Rayner, with the firm’s name standing for Mica and Chessy. The influential partnership designed residences around the world for prominent figures in art, fashion, and business. Their rooms combined clarity, comfort, and cosmopolitan sophistication, often placing important art and carefully selected objects within restrained settings. Both founders were inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 1993.   Browse All Auction Lots The Art of New York Interiors 10 Lots to Watch Lot 251: Barbara Barry for Baker, pair mahogany commodes BROWSE Lot 222: Custom green velvet sofa, Thierry Despont BROWSE Lot 195: Philippe Lepatre, large Abstract oil on canvas, 1966   BROWSE  Lot 205: Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, large Chan coffee table, c. 1965 BROWSE Lot 190: Italian Art Deco Pair of Easy Chairs and Ottomans in Custom Bizarre Silk   BROWSE Lot 151: Pair French Art deco smoke rock crystal lamps   BROWSE Lot 170: Maison Bagues attrib, pair 2-arm tole and rock crystal sconces   BROWSE Lot 150: Maison Jansen (attrib) French Louis XVI style bureau plat   BROWSE Lot 275: (6) Dessin Fournir “Augusta” dining chairs   BROWSE Lot 001: Pair Sevres style Old Paris Porcelain parcel gilt and bisque vases   BROWSE
