Artist Spotlight: Barbara Kiskovski

Q

Best gift you’ve ever received?

A.

Without a doubt, the best gift I have ever received was my horse, a black Friesian and one of the most beautiful creatures I have ever laid my eyes on. I grew up in the countryside in a horse region and started riding fairly young. I actually have an oil painting of him that I made years ago hanging at home.

Q

Best compliment you’ve ever received?

A.

That I was like sunshine. I think we all aspire to radiate bright and positive energy to those around us so that was a beautiful compliment.

Q

What’s the best thing about shopping in person?

A.

For me, the best thing about shopping in person is being able to see and feel the texture of the items. I am a very tactile person, and the feel of the fabric is a significant factor in the furniture or clothes I choose. I believe that texture is also an essential element in art. I love exploring different textures and many of my paintings feature that element.

Q

Most adventurous thing you’ve done in your life?

A.

Swimming from Alcatraz to the shore in frigid waters.

Q

Best advice you’d give your teenage self?

A.

Start now! We love to think we have all the time in the world, that we can push things to tomorrow or wait for the perfect moment, but the truth is time flies in the link of an eye. The earlier you start, the better you will get, the more opportunities will come your way and the further you will go. I also strongly believe that whatever skills or knowledge you acquire in your childhood and teenage years will stay with you for life.

Q

What inspired you to become an artist, and what motivated you to pursue this career path?

A.

I drew and painted as long as I can remember. I studied for a short period of time in an all girls boarding school when I was 13 and I remember sneaking into the art building at night to paint. To be able to share this passion with other people is something I am extremely grateful for. It’s a very special feeling when a complete stranger loves an abstract piece you created entirely from scratch and from your imagination.
