Sarah Ramsey, a native from Richmond, Virginia, graduated from Denison University with a BA in Studio Art and later received her Certificate in Fine and Decorative Arts from Christie’s Education in London. Her career began in the auction world where she worked for a reputable group of auction houses from Florence, Italy to Washington DC. She eventually landed in New York where she worked for Sotheby’s in both Client Services and the Contemporary Art Department for several years before coming to Cullman & Kravis in 2004.
Sarah has given way to many remarkable yet comfortable interiors around the country. Most noteworthy, she has completed projects in a landmarked building in New York’s theater district, a historic pre-war apartment and is currently working on a waterfront property in Palm Beach. Sarah lives in the city, and is an avid animal lover who fosters strays and volunteers weekly at the Animal Care & Control of NY.
Q
What is your current TV obsession?
A.
I am hooked on British crime dramas right now. They are so much more sophisticated than our American shows. Marcela, Luther, Broadchurch, The Fall…..I was never a binge watcher until I discovered them!
Q
What is inspiring you in life (and the industry) right now?
A.
At Cullman & Kravis, we are fortunate enough to work with many clients who allow us to have the creative freedom for bespoke products. We are so inspired by the artists we work with who create unique lighting, furniture, fabrics, embroidery, etc. Nancy Lorenz, Le Studio Anthost, and Penn & Fletcher are just a few of my favorites.
Q
What are some of the podcasts you listen to and why?
A.
Right now, I am listening to Ear Hustle. It is produced from San Quinten State Prison by two inmates and it really humanizes those who are incarcerated. I’ve laughed and cried listening to the stories of life before, and inside prison. It is very humbling. I was in tears when I heard that one of the hosts’ sentences was commuted last year.
Q
Who is your ideal client?
A.
My ideal client not only makes quick decisions and has a clear vision of what they want, but it also comfortable enough saying ‘I will defer to you on that, since you are the expert’. It’s music to my ears! We just installed a project for a client who said just that more often than not – and at the handover he said it was exactly what he wanted. Success! So gratifying.
Q
How did you get started in this field?
A.
After majoring in studio art in college, I thought I would end up in the Gallery or Museum world. But I was fortunate enough to get an internship at an auction house in Italy. I then spent a year at Christie’s Education in London, and eventually landed at Sotheby’s in New York. Looking for a change, but still wanting to be working with art and antiques, I came to Cullman & Kravis as Ellie’s assistant – and I have now been with her for 15 years, working my way up to partner!
Q
What do you like to do in your free time outside of work?
A.
I have always been passionate about animal welfare, so in my free time you can find me at Animal Care Centers in Harlem walking shelter dogs. All of my friends wonder how I don’t have an apartment full of dogs. I do fall in love with at least two or three every week, but what keeps me coming back is the dedication of the staff and other volunteers. They give the thousands of animals that come in yearly every chance to get adopted into a loving home.
