DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

Mike Rupp Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse

Congratulations to the designers of the Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse!

This year Newel worked with designers Mike Rupp, Studio Dorion, and Tara McCauley on their individual rooms at the Showhouse.

We are excited to share our interview with designer Mike Rupp, owner of Rupp Studio, and for you to learn more about his “brooding and romantic” lounge.

Q

Can you tell us about your inspiration for your room?

A.

Taking the lessons we recently learned of feeling confined to one’s surroundings, I wanted to explore the importance of one’s space as a complete atmosphere.  A place of solitude, inspiration, engagement, etc.

Q

What was the biggest challenge in decorating your room?

A.

Ultimately my client is all the guests that walk-through the show house, so with that in mind I wanted to conjure an experience.  Something visually impactful and enveloping.

Q

What three adjectives would you use to describe your design?

A.

Brooding, Romantic & Dreamy.

Q

Did you collaborate or discuss your design ideas with other designers?

A.

I enjoy collaboration on a project and engaged one of my mentors to bounce ideas and discuss potential pieces.

Q

What was the biggest challenge sourcing furniture?

A.

The biggest challenge was sourcing available furniture and accessories that told a cohesive story.  One pivotal piece could redirect the other selections, so there’s a bit of needed agility.

Q

What made you decide to shop at Newel?

A.

I reached out to incredible galleries and showrooms that represent a range of artists and styles. Newel is one of the leaders in this arena.
