Newel LLC is excited to officially announce our partnership with OneTreePlanted.
We couldn’t have aligned with an organization more dedicated to the preservation of our planet’s forests.
Newel’s Commitment
Since 1939, Newel has stood for reclaimed and renewable design. Our passion for antiques and legacy art & design has allowed us to maintain a low carbon footprint and growth with zero impact on our shared environment. We are proud to say that our commitment and sense of responsibility doesn’t end there! Like you, we are increasingly aware and concerned by deforestation. So in honor of our 80th year as NY’s premier antique dealer, we have just planted 1939 trees in Mata Atlantica (The Atlantic Forest), Brazil.
Our partners at OneTreePlanted are working to restore 30 million acres of forest by the year 2050. Doing so will not only rebuild trees, but will restore water quantity and quality for millions of people in Sao Paulo and it’s surrounding communities. It creates jobs and income opportunities. It will establish land management practices with sustainable values. It will save plants and wildlife that will otherwise become extinct.
Why Maza Atlantica
The Atlantic forest stretches from Brazil’s Atlantic coast all the way to Paraguay. It is home to more than half of Brazil’s population. 500 Years ago, this forest covered roughly 500,000 square miles. Today, more than 85% of this area has been deforested, resulting in the near extinction of many animal and plant species. While many of the earth’s forests face complete decimation by natural disasters such as forest fires as well as the lumber industry, much of Brazil’s deforestation has been harmed by both legal and illegal harvesting of wood to supply China’s booming exports of low quality furniture.
80% of the world’s forests are already destroyed
The deforestation of Maza Atlantica started over 500 years ago and has increased at an alarming rate
At the current rate of global deforestation, the world’s rainforests face complete extinction by 2119
28,000 species are projected to be extinct within 25 years due to deforestation
The destruction of our rainforests also destroy natural remedies, the key ingredients in 25% of all medicines. Aspirin, for instance, comes from tree bark!
A Football Field’s worth of forest is destroyed by people every 1.2 seconds
80,000 acres of forest are destroyed daily
The livelihoods of 1.6 billion people rely on forests
