Q
What is your dream project to take on?
A.
I would love to renovate and decorate an old Gilded Age mansion that’s run down, but still has most of its original details. That sort of house, with an owner/client who wants to maintain the spirit of the house, but make it a modern home with the feeling that it’s just always been evolving since the beginning. I would mix periods and styles to have a contemporary version of an English Country Home that’s been in the same family for hundreds of years. Layered and decadent, but still fresh and full of unexpected surprises. Saturated colors, rich finishes, French textiles, contemporary art, and stunning chandeliers in every room! I have just been waiting for someone to buy the old Woolworth estate, Winfield Hall, in Glenn Cove and hire me to bring it back to life. That’s my dream!
Q
What is a book that everyone should read?
A.
Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. It’s a beautifully written snapshot of life in Manhattan at the end of the 1930’s and a great story too!
Q
Best compliment you’ve ever received?
A.
One of my clients, at the end of a year long renovation, said “I don’t know why everyone says renovations are so difficult. I had not one bit of stress. Wesley took care of everything!” That’s the kind of service I always want to offer, but it’s hard to find clients who can just let go and enjoy the process. There’s always going to be stress and issues in a renovation, but clients who don’t micromanage or penny pinch, and just let me do my job, are always happiest.
Q
Are there qualities in potential clients that you identify that make you know you have to run away?
A.
When they’ve had more than two previous designers that they no longer work with it’s a big red flag. Early in my career I took on a project with a client that had 12 designers before me. She’d fired the biggest names in NYC design! Clearly she was a total nut job. I lasted a little over a year, which was longer than two of my design idols she’d previously canned, so I was proud of that, but that year was absolute hell. I also watch out for anyone who’s previous designer won’t return their calls.
