Congratulations to the designers of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas, Texas edition!
This year Newel worked with designer Anthony Baratta on his “big, bold, and colorful” study.
Check out our interview with him below to learn about his design inspiration, the greatest challenge he encountered, and so much more!
Q
What was the biggest challenge in decorating your room?
A.
THE SCALE OF THE CEILING! We have a 14 ft ceiling just to the soffit and then another 10 feet above that. Scale was so important here so that the room still felt cozy and inviting.
Q
Can you tell us about your design inspiration?
A.
We began the design process during the Queens Platinum Jubilee. We love Balmoral castle and we’re inspired by the tartans used there. English sensibility with an American twist.
Q
What three adjectives would you use to describe your design?
A.
Bold, Big, Colorful.
Q
What is your favorite room (besides your own) from the Showhouse?
Q
Is there anything you wish you had done differently in your design?
A.
Not at all. Is was everything we dreamed of and more!
Q
Did you collaborate or discuss your design ideas with other designers?
A.
We are such a small team so we keep most things in house. We do sometimes discuss inspirations but the final product usually exceeds even our expectations!
Q
How were your initial design plans different from the final product?
A.
Kips Bay, as you may know is a labor of love and collaboration with so many of our trusted vendors and resources. So yes! The design morphed as the project progressed just by virtue of what we had at our disposal and what we could get quickly from market. It’s our loyal foundation of vendors that make this all possible and ultimately a spectacular show!
Q
How did you go about sourcing furniture? Did you run into any obstacles doing so
A.
Thankfully we had many antiques in storage for upholstery and the big sofa was loaned by the incomparable DeAngelis, Ltd who also made the intensely gorgeous slipcover for us. The accessories were mostly on loan from other antique dealers like yourselves and others like Wolf Hall Antiques here in Texas and Susan Silver Antiques in Massachusetts
Q
What do you like most about the item(s) you selected from Newel?
A.
The intense SCALE! These items ground the entire space with their gorgeous scale and provide anchors and focal points for your eye to dance around the room. The lantern has this beautiful glow and shimmer when you look up and the student lamp is just an unbelievable scale and so sculptural in the back of the room.
Q
What made you decide to shop at Newel?
A.
Quality. Your collection is bar – none the most luxurious, unique and gorgeous items on todays market. You KNOW antiques.
