Q

Can you tell us about your design inspiration?

A.

I imagined our study to serve as both a quiet, cozy place to work and read or an intimate and lively room to host guests for cocktails. I did my own take on traditional, layered, English-style decorating with an updated Floridian spin on it. My goal was to design a space that felt as though it could have been decorated over the years.

Q

What three adjectives would you use to describe your design?

A.

Layered, eclectic and livable.

Q

How were your initial design plans different from the final product?

A.

I originally imagined lining the walls inside the applied moldings with a patterned fabric. This design began to feel too busy in conjunction with all of our furniture pieces, fabrics and accessories, so I instead opted for a two-tone paint scheme and put the pattern on the ceiling with the teal and gold wallpaper.

Q

How did you go about sourcing furniture? Did you run into any obstacles doing so?

A.

The Philip and Kelvin Laverne bronze coffee table is my grandmother’s (passed down to her from her uncle); she kindly loaned it to me for the show house. It’s my favorite piece in her home and was the starting point for the design of the room. I knew I wanted to create a collected feel throughout the room by mixing styles and time periods, but also was sure to incorporate pieces that felt timeless. The mid-century wood carved acanthus tables from Newel provided a nice mix of materials with the brass metal finishes on the 19th century Louis XVI style desk and Billy Baldwin Cole Porter etageres.

Q

What made you decide to shop at Newel?

A.

Newel has a wonderfully curated selection of pieces, so I knew I would find something special to fit our space. I wanted something unexpected and sculptural to ground our space and these beautiful tables were just the thing!

Q

What do you like most about the item(s) you selected from Newel?

A.

I love the acanthus carved bases on the end tables; they are so unique and a subtle tropical nod to the Floridian locale.
